Adverse Food Reactions:
Be Prepared To Respond

Many people are convinced they have a food allergy because of adverse food reactions they obtain from eating a certain product, but the reality is in controlled study groups up to 25% of this group stated they have allergies, but only 5% actually did.

The "Non-Allergic" Reaction

A broad category of sensitivities exists known as the non-allergic reaction which covers any of the following situations. Each of these food reactions are commonly mistaken for an actual food allergy.

Food Intolerance

The three most common food sensitivity conditions in this category are lactose intolerance, gluten intolerance and celiac disease. Each of these are a common adverse food reaction but they are not a food allergy.

Chemical Reaction

MSG (monosodium glutamate) and sulphites (or sulfites) are the two most common additives which will create food reactions. But included in this category is artificial food dyes or colorings, preservatives, flavor enhancers or food binders. Each of these are all troublemakers for many people which results in an adverse food reaction.

Pharmacologic Reactions

This group is the hardest to track because it is actually caused by substances which occur naturally in our food supply. Many people state adverse reactions to the caffeine in tea or coffee. Also headaches and migraines are supported by the consumption of natural chemicals in wine, aged cheese, chocolate,or hot dogs and sausages. Some people are also affected by MSG from this category. Many food items do not have added MSG. In many food products, it is a naturally occurring product.

Food Poisoning

A toxic food reaction, otherwise commonly called food poisoning, occurs when eating any item which is contaminated by a virus, bacteria, or a toxin. Frequently in the news, it has been reported of problems because of food spoilage or bacterial contamination. Food toxins then can result from ingesting poisonous mushrooms, berries or some seafoods.

As shown above, adverse reactions to food can be the result of many different situations. This is why it is very important that you contact your physician or get emergency medical care when its needed. Adequate testing to verify your condition's source is recommended to verify present and future safety measures are implemented. Adequate treatment plans can then be staged to prevent any future complications.
