Be Wary When Buying Local Also!

The following comment I received on my "Contact Us" portion of the site. It raises a very important point which someone with a sulfite allergy or sensitivity must be very careful of.
I have been unable to contact the gentleman in return because his email address is showing incorrect when I try to return a response. I was hoping to confirm his approval for me placing this information in this forum. I have decided to do it anyway because of its importance. If he happens to see this, please contact me again and I will gladly give him his rights as the author if he so desires.

Be Wary When Buying Local Also
First Name: william
Comment/Question: Sulfides
Buying
sulfite free food direct from a farmer does not always work, as some farmers will claim they do not use miracle grow or other chemicals when they do. 900 mg. to 1000 mg. of vitamin B1 daily and 10 mg. vitamin B2 twice a day (not from a multivitamin tablet) seems to help some with my sulfite issues. High dose of vitamin B12 may help with the rapid type of sulfite reaction, it is mentioned in a book titled "Food Chemical Sensitivity" by Robert Buist PhD. Foods that are showing signs of spoiling-quickly may be low in or free of sulfides.
Site Owners Comment: One of the most important parts of this comment is the claim about farmers and what they do/do not use on their crops.
When you question a farmer at a local market, store or a roadside stand,
first be very polite. This individual probably knows nothing about food allergies and sensitivities also.
Think back to when you were first given your diagnosis.
Do you remember that
overwhelming feeling of helplessness, desperation and just plain old depression. Probably one of the first things that went through your mind was, well "what can I eat?"
This farmer standing in front of you is going through those same stages. He knows nothing about your dilemma. It is no where in his mind that "Miracle Gro" could be a danger to your health. His mind is thinking I don't use pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, plus any of the other hundreds of chemicals out there.
So when you ask him if he uses anything on his crops,
his mind is thinking poisons from all these chemicals. His mind is not relating to the "good stuff" he thinks he is using. You are the expert here in your situation. Walk him or her gently through your requests so they understand Miracle Gro is a danger also to your health.
Other than protecting yourself, you will also be explaining to the farmer an
important piece of the puzzle that other people need to know also.
