Gestational Diabetes Symptoms:

Often An Asymptomatic Condition,
Testing For Diabetic Health

Often there is no outward signs of gestational diabetes symptoms, but most doctors will still run some simple tests to verify your diabetic health by ruling out its presence in most mothers anyway. This test is usually run around the 24th to 28th week of pregnancy. High risk mothers can even be checked as early as 13 weeks to verify the early symptoms of diabetes are not present. Prevention is still always the best cure for any condition.

High Risk Factors Prompting Testing

When any of the following factors are present the screening test is always given early. Normally the doctor will monitor and follow your blood sugar readings more frequently in the 2nd and 3rd trimester of your pregnancy if he notices you have a prior history of:

  • higher than normal glucose readings

  • you have previously delivered a large baby (greater than 9 lbs.)

  • glucose is present during a standard urinalysis testing

  • you come from a family with a history of diabetes

Occasionally, but very rarely, a few women will mention a few inconvenient symptoms of gestational diabetes. If you notice any of these starting around the 4th-6th month, mention it to your doctor just as a safety precaution.

  • excessive hunger

  • excessive thirst

  • unexplained sudden weight gain

  • increased urination

  • increase in the re-occurrence of vaginal infections

So as a safety precaution, due to almost no outward visible symptoms in many women, your doctor if not already monitoring your blood sugars, testing should be started to verify the early symptoms of diabetes is not causing any of these gestational diabetes symptoms.
