Don't try to convince a person with gluten intolerance how lucky they are, but it is one of the easiest conditions of all of the digestive system disorders to resolve and maintain a healthy gut.

What Is Gluten Intolerance

With this condition, your body is telling you that it is incapable of breaking down the gluten protein in the foods that you eat. Gluten comprises approximately 80% of the molecules in any wheat, rye or barley product you ingest.

Some of the common signs are bloating, cramping, intestinal gas, abdominal pain and diarrhea. All of these symptoms can be mild or severe, with the strongest symptoms showing depending on the quantity of gluten you have consumed.

Once the gluten is out of your system though the symptoms will dissipate until the next time you start eating more of the offending products. Regulation therefore is easily controlled by removing all gluten products from your diet.

At the initial diagnosis in a small child, the hardest part for that child is understanding there is certain foods they can not eat. The transition can be much smoother if the rest of the family is willing to change their diets also to gluten free at home or during a family meal.

How To Make A Young Child Understand

Do not instill fear or guilt in your young child. Gluten Intolerance is a life-long condition, so the child just needs guidance to learn how to handle it appropriately.

Do Precautions Need To Be Taken For Your Child

From the beginning, do not curtail your child's special activities. Sports, birthday party's at a friends, school trips etc. are all possible with some prior arrangements. As the parent, just be sure you are prepared. Call ahead and explain your child's situation. Check on the menu or snacks to be served. Offer to send some of your child's allowed foods for everyone or just send one goodie bag for their own.

As Your Child Ages

As your child ages, teens and young adults always have a tendency to feel "left out" from the crowd. It is during this time, support from the parents and the medical team is essential. With this condition, the child must understand there is no safe amount of cheating. Once they are diagnosed with gluten intolerance, there is no remission. It is always there.
