Hostess At A Party
For The Allergic Child

Are you going to be the hostess at a party for the allergic child?

Your son or daughter has cajoled, begged, pleaded and "promised the moon" just for the opportunity of having their own birthday party. You, as the parent, have finally gave in and agreed. Then, the bad news comes - one or more of the guests will have food allergies. You are scared to death you will not know what to do!

Safety For Your Child's Guests

Your top priority now as the hostess at a party for the allergic child is everyone's safety. This will take some advance planning and education if this is to be your first time. The parents of the child or children with allergies understand you do not want to do anything that will hurt their child. Therefore the two of you need to get together for some advance planning.

Simple Steps To Make A Successful Event

There is a few simple steps that can be followed to help ensure a safe environment for every child in attendance. Try following these to help alleviate a lot of the stress which can arise.

  1. When the invitations are sent, include a line asking if any of the children do have any type of allergy. If so, what type is it, and do you need to take any special precautions because of it.

  2. Request emergency contact information from everyone

  3. Make your home safe

    • childproof the party area for very young children

    • try to keep the party in one centralized area (either indoors or outdoors)

    • If indoors- try to re-arrange one room-close to the bathroom for easy access- so the party can be kept in one area. Remove all toys, pillows, blankets or anything with fragrance such as candles or potpourri

    • keep all pets, pet toys, pet beds, litter boxes etc. away from the party area for the day

    • cleanse and disinfect with bleach anything the kids will come in contact with such as telephone, doorknob, toys, towels etc.

  4. Food allergy safety concerns must be addressed with the parents of the affected children. Make out an allergy plan with the parents. Be sure you understand all medications, and how and when to use them if necessary. Cover the entire menu, what will be served, where it is bought or where it will be made- cross contamination issues must be understood. If the parent of the allergic child offers to make food for her child or the whole group, allow her that right. She as the parent is more nervous than you will ever be about being the hostess at a party for the allergic child. If the subject comes up or even you could offer if she would like to come to the party to help with chaperone duties, games, crafts or whatever may be needed.

  5. Instead of lots of food, kids love games, toys, music and goodie bags. Keep their interest and the excitement level high by offering do-it-yourself things for them to do.

With some prior planning and the help of the parents and children with allergies, a safe but fun environment can be maintained for everyone. Being a hostess at a party for the allergic child can be a rewarding experience. It gives you the opportunity to see and understand the restrictions some other kids must live by every minute of their lives.
