Infant Milk Allergies:
Adverse Reactions
From The Cow

Infant milk allergies are generally only a complication when it is impossible or improbable for the mother to breastfeed her newborn child. After this decision is made, your doctor now must find an alternate food source for the newborn baby.

If you do seem to notice continuous adverse reactions after your baby is placed on a milk-based formula though, the following are often recognized as possible allergy symptoms to milk and its proteins.

  • skin rash

  • gas and bloating

  • hives

  • vomiting

  • diarrhea

  • abdominal pain

Keep a log of dates, times, amounts fed and any unusual symptoms you notice and give this information to the doctor as soon as possible. The doctor now has to determine a new food source for your baby.

What's The Next Step

If infant milk allergies are determined to be the cause, there is quite a few other infant formulas available on today's market that can be substituted.

The trick though is finding the right formula through a process of trial and error. So your doctor will be recommending different types until a variety is found which your baby likes but it will also supply all the nutrients your baby needs for personal growth and development.

Some of the most common substitutes in feeding formulas are from either the grain family (rice-based) or plants (soy, coconut, almonds, or peanuts). Each of these may have to be rotated to find an agreeable food source for your newborn's immature digestive system. Since the primary objective now is finding a food source which your baby has the capabilities of processing the food to derive immediate nutritional value from it, a rotational schedule of trying different formulas and different brands may have to be set up until the perfect match can be found.

An Occasional Anomaly Of Breastfeeding

During the breastfeeding months, if a milk sensitivity seems to be creating any types of reactions, often the mother may have to discontinue ingesting milk or any milk proteins in her diet also. The proteins casein and whey can still show the symptoms of possible infant milk allergies through the mother's breast milk. The only way to prevent this anomaly is for the mother to follow a strict milk-free diet herself.
