No one ever seems to hand out a list of low cholesterol foods. However, many patient's have been informed they need to work on their cholesterol numbers. What Is CholesterolIn the news via radio, TV, magazines, your doctor's office or everywhere, the necessity of getting our cholesterol numbers down is explained continuously. Most people therefore assume having a list of low cholesterol foods means we can eliminate all these "bad foods" from our diet, hence no more cholesterol.Cholesterol, otherwise known as animal fats, are a very important part of our diet though. Dietary fats are located in every single cell in our body. We generate our body's energy source, hormone reproduction and brain and nerve cell regeneration because of it. Two Types Of CholesterolThere is only two ways we obtain cholesterol. We are either born with it (the human body manufactures it's own cholesterol) or we ingest it from the animal food sources we eat. Therefore having cholesterol is not the problem - just having too much of it is. The two major types of cholesterol therefore are known as: - LDL or "bad" cholesterol often clings to the side of the arteries walls thus narrowing the passageways which restricts blood flow
- HDL or "good" cholesterol tries to attach the LDL to itself and carry it out of the bloodstream. With low ratios of HDL and high ratios of LDL- the body has a difficult time of keeping the arteries cleaned out.
Therefore the objective is to set up conditions where your liver is capable of flushing the unwanted toxins from your body by using a balance of LDL and HDL cholesterol in the body. 
List Of Low Cholesterol FoodsReading the ingredient label of every item you purchase is the ideal way to find low cholesterol foods. Any product which is marked <2mg/serving may use the tag cholesterol-free. Any product labeled <20mg per serving is known as low cholesterol. So some common suggestions which are low or no cholesterol include the following:- Low-fat (or non-fat) dairy products
- dried beans, seeds, fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grain products
- liquid oils, especially avocado oil or olive oil (canola oil is also in this group but many are now recommending you avoid this type because of its questionable returns to your health because it is manufactured from a genetically modified organism)
- tub margarine which is labeled no trans fats or hydrogenated fats (eliminate partially hydrogenated fats also)
- 3 ounces of unsalted pistachio nuts daily
- cinnamon extract which is water soluble (from health food store or pharmacy). Do not use the powdered varieties from the grocery store. You must use too much for it to be effective and these high levels of consumption can be toxic to the body)
Current Industry Standards In Food Manufacturing (per serving)Contents: Cholesterol Free: less than 2mg. Cholesterol and 2g or less of saturated fat Low Cholesterol: 20mg or less cholesterol and less than 2g saturated fat Reduced Cholesterol: at least 25% less than original product plus under 2g saturated fat - add barley oil, barley flour or steel cut oats (oatmeal) into your diet
- foods which are high in pectin (soluble fiber) such as apples, grapefruit, carrots, cabbage and prunes
- add fresh squeezed lemon juice as a garnish (soluble fiber) to your beverages, vegetables, fish or fruits
- use fresh garlic in your cooking
- add 8-12 walnuts or pecans to your daily diet
So try making a few simple changes and incorporating a low cholesterol diet into your daily routine. This will include trying to avoid all high fat meats such as bacon, ground meats or sausage, skip the deep fried foods (in favor of roasting or broiling), have fresh fruits or sorbet as your choice of dessert, and try sticking to the list of low cholesterol foods, often many people can reduce their numbers enough that another medication is not a requirement for their treatment plan.
