Still Unlimited Choices
To Retain Diabetic Health

For many people, snacks for diabetics conjures up nightmarish choices of foods when they first get diagnosed with diabetes. Although you do have to be a little more careful with many of your selections, because many items are nothing but empty calories with no nutritional benefits, there is plenty of options still available to choose from which can keep your eyes and stomach happy but you can still retain good diabetic health.

Good Choice Of Snacks For The Diabetic

To beat the munchies and its cravings, how about trying one of these:

  • Homemade trail mix

  • Baked sweet potato chips or fries

  • Seasoned air-popped popcorn (with no butter)

  • 1/2 cup low-fat cottage with fresh cantaloupe chunks

  • Non-fat yogurt with fresh fruit

  • 1/2 cup fresh berries (blackberries, blueberries, raspberries or strawberries)

  • 1/4 cup nuts of your choice

  • one hard-boiled egg

  • sugarfree popsicle or frozen juice bar

  • a cup of sugarfree homemade cocoa

  • a 1-2 oz piece of good quality (70 to 80% dark cacao) chocolate 3-4 times per week has proven health benefits per current research

  • ten pieces of baked whole wheat crackers with 1/4 cup salsa

  • raw vegetable tray with low-fat dip

  • peanut butter and all fruit jelly on 1/2 whole wheat english muffin

  • two large fresh strawberries dipped in melted dark chocolate

  • sugarfree jello with fat free whipped cream

It is therefore obvious after seeing this list, there is a whole bunch of options still available for some high energy diabetic snacks.

If you also have the time for experimenting with food preparation, many regular recipes can be converted to a no-sugar or a low-sugar version with less fat, less calories and fewer carbohydrates just by using a few simple basic rules. Ultimately a whole new world of snacks for diabetes can open up for you and your loved ones.
