Sugar Free Sports Drink:
A Safer Alternative For Diabetics

Making your own sugar free sports drink at home will replace the popular varieties found at many stores which have sugar/carbohydrate levels much too high for the diabetic. If you need to replace your fluid levels because of electrolyte loss and water just does not seem to relieve your body's cravings, mix up a gallon and alternate glasses between water and this sugar free recipe. This version will help to replace your sodium, potassium and carbohydrate levels quickly but safely.

Ingredients

  • 1 can unsweetened orange juice, thawed
  • 2 T. lemon juice
  • 1 T. lime juice
  • 3/4 tsp. salt***
  • Distilled water, approximately 2 cups

*** only use the salt during extra heavy workouts or hot weather conditions which result in heavy perspiration. The salt is not needed for regular workouts. The citrus from the juices is actually a better option to replace fluid and electrolyte loss.

Add all ingredients to a one gallon container and fill with water until full. Store under refrigeration. If you prefer it to be less sweet, add 3 cups extra water.

In certain situations though, when a sports drink is not mandatory because of excess fluid and electrolyte loss in your body, try a few other suggestions first and see if this is all your body needs for supplementation.
